Dermal fillers are injectable cosmetic treatments such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyl apatite, and collagen which improve the appearance of wrinkles, augment lips, raise scar depressions, and replace volume loss in the soft tissues of a patient’s face. Fillers offer long-lasting results and are administered through the use of small injections, which “fill in” creases and folds in the face in spots that have lost collagen and fat.
Restylane was first hyaluronic acid-based filler on the market, and continues to be among the most popular worldwide. Hyaluronic acid, like collagen is a substance naturally found in the skin. As we age, the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen decreases. Restylane offers natural-looking youthful results when injected to the folds that appear between the upper lip and cheeks. It is also effective in plumping up fine vertical lines around the mouth and plumping the lips. It is also frequently used to fill out scarring, such as pockmarks left by acne.
Radiesse provides an immediate correction of wrinkles and folds and also stimulates the production of new collagen, which provides longer lasting results. Treatment usually takes around 15 minutes and fewer injections as needed than with other fillers. Patients typically enjoy the effects of Radiesse for between ten months and a year. RADIESSE is the first injectable treatment approved by the FDA to add volume to the back of the hands. When injected under the skin, RADIESSE adds fullness and masks protruding veins and tendons in the hands, providing a more youthful appearance to the hands.
Most patients experience a smoother and more youthful appearance following treatments with Radiesse or Restylane. Results typically last between 6-18 months, although each specific brand will offer slightly different results and may last longer or shorter than the others. The condition of each patient’s skin also affects the results and how long they will last. Dr. Yuen may suggest additional treatments to enhance and extend the effects of dermal fillers. Dermal facial injections are not only quick to administer but do not require a long recovery time with most patients returning to work or other activities as soon as the injection process is completed.
