Varicose Veins Q & A

What Are Laser Vein Treatments?

Laser vein treatments are a method of removing varicose veins in the legs and arms. Varicose veins are caused when a blood vessel does not function correctly, disrupting circulation and resulting in blood pooling. This causes the swollen ropey appearance of the varicose vein. The heat of the laser is used to damage the problematic veins, causing scar tissue to form and close the vein off. The circulatory system sends blood through different routes and, eventually, because the vein is no longer receiving a supply of blood, it will die and disappear completely.

What Happens During a Laser Vein Treatment?

During laser treatment for varicose veins, Dr. Yuen uses a handheld device that simultaneously directs laser heat and a cooling blast of air over the area of skin being treated. The laser penetrates the skin to reach the targeted vein, which quickly absorbs the laser’s energy. At this point, the energy from the laser converts to heat and destroys the vein without harming any surrounding tissue or the surface of the skin. Since the vein is now destroyed, the body will gradually remove what's left of the vessel. Patients are provided with a pair of medical compression stockings to wear to speed up healing and prevent a return of the vein. Most patients see an improvement after one treatment but may need two or more to be rid of all varicose veins.

What Are the Benefits of Laser Vein Treatment?

Laser vein treatment is one of the most effective ways to remove varicose veins. Laser treatments have a much shorter recovery time than more invasive surgical procedures and involve significantly less pain and side effects. This means that patients will have little to no downtime and can immediately return to work and regular activities. Because it is also a less involved procedure, laser treatment is typically less expensive than alternatives such as vein stripping or ambulatory phlebectomy.
