Laser Treatment Q & A

What Are Laser Skin Treatments?

Laser skin treatments use concentration bursts of light energy to address uneven facial redness, skin tone discoloration, broken capillaries, brown (age) spots, and varicose veins. The laser energy causes a chemical change in the skin cells, which can address discoloration, scarring, texture issues and more. This treatment is also used to clear acne and boost collagen production. Laser skin treatment is very safe and non-invasive. Laser sessions take between 15 minutes and an hour, depending on the size of the are being treated. Treatments are scheduled to work around a job and social obligations since there is little to no downtown required.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is used to stop hair from growing by using a highly concentrated light energy to destroy hair follicles. The pigments within the follicle absorb the light, which eliminates the hair and stops the follicle from growing more. Laser hair removal can be done on the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and any other location with unwanted hair. The benefits of this treatment are that it targets undesired hair without harming the skin that surrounds the follicle, addresses several hairs at a time, and has predictable, permanent results.

What Happens During Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal takes between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated. The clinician will provide an ice pack to cool and numb the area before and after treatment. Some sensitive areas may also benefit from the application of a topical anesthetic prior to treatment. The device used to administer the laser will be calibrated to the color, width, and location of the hair as well as to the individual’s skin color. A cool gel or special cooling device will be used during the procedure to protect the skin and conduct the laser energy to the hair follicles. Many patients describe the treatment as feeling like a rubber band snap and most say that treatment is not painful. Typically, patients require 6-8 treatments to see the full benefits of laser hair removal. Following treatment are scheduled every 4-6 weeks and continue until no hair growth is seen.
